Cristian Ganea Leaves Athletic Club After Terminating Final Year Of Contract
Cristian Ganea’s time in Bilbao has come to an end. Athletic announced Tuesday evening that an agreement was reached to terminate the final year of Ganea’s contract which means the 28-year-old is now free to sign with another club.
The Romanian initially joined Athletic in the summer of 2018 after being signed from Viitorul, but his arrival coincided with Yuri Berchiche’s blockbuster move from PSG. Chances were limited as Ganea who made just two appearances before leaving for Numancia on loan in January.
Last summer Ganea was determined to earn his place in the Athletic squad but was not part of Gaizka Garitano’s plans. In January he returned to Viitorul on loan where he played well but was unable to convince the manager.
Ganea wasn’t going to have minutes this season with Berchiche and Mikel Balenziaga in the team so with one year left on his contract the club and player agreed to part ways. As reported by Javier Beltrán of AS, Ganea has attracted interest from clubs in Austria, Poland, Italy, and Greece with Aris Thessaloniki said to be the most likely destination.
