It may have been a disappointing end to the season for Athletic, but there were some things to celebrate and be excited about. Throughout the entire campaign the Lions boasted one of La Liga’s best defensive units, conceding just 38 goals all year, with a number of players proving to be among the best at their positions.

Spain manager Luis Enrique has taken notice of Athletic’s stars over the past year and could be looking to bring some players into the National Team moving forward. According to a report from Sergio Santos Chozas of AS, Luis Enrique has included five Athletic players in his pre-list for September matches against Germany and Ukraine.

Unai Simón, Iñigo Martínez, Yeray, Unai Núñez, and Iker Muniain were all included in the list and could be called up next month. Since joining Athletic, Martínez has been in contention for a starting role alongside Sergio Ramos. Meanwhile, Simón is ready to challenge David De Gea and Kepa Arrizabalaga to be Spain’s starting goalkeeper.

Spain are scheduled to travel to Stuttgart for a match against Germany on 3 September, followed by hosting Ukraine in Madrid just three days later. La Roja will be preparing for the upcoming European Championship which was pushed to next summer due to the pandemic and by then other Athletic players such as Ander Capa and Yuri Berchiche could also be in the running to make the squad.
