Athletic Club Reveal 2020/2021 Away Shirt
The new Athletic away shirt has finally arrived. On Friday the club formally released the 2020/2021 kit which pays tribute to Athletic’s unique philosophy and dedication to developing young players from the Basque Country for the first team.
When leaked images of the shirt first surfaced fans were understandably confused at the design. The solid grey with red and blue pinstripes were unlike any other pattern that Athletic have ever worn. In the release, the club explained the meaning behind the distinctive design.
“Inspired by the path that the Lions travel from the academy to the first team, the gray shirt includes red lines that go from the hem to the neck symbolizing the trajectory of the Cachorros to the first team. The 2020/21 stripes are part of New Balance Football’s ‘Born of the People’ / ‘Herritik sortu zinalako’ campaign for Athletic, in recognition of the Club’s unique identity.”
New Balance Football CEO, Kenny McCallum, also shared the reasoning behind the shirt. “Athletic Club’s commitment is to develop local talent for elite football,” he said. “We were inspired by that rise to the top for this unique design and we are excited to see the team compete in this shirt.”
“I really want to wear the shirt,” said Iñaki Williams. “It’s great to have a kit like this, which recognizes our path from Lezama to playing in San Mamés.” Several players sported the new shirt for the club’s release.
Along with the grey pinstripe shirt, the shorts will be a slightly lighter shade of grey while the socks will also be grey with a red accent. The goalkeeper shirt is a bright green with a graphic on the shoulders and sleeves. New Balance have used Aerojaq technology fabric in the shirts to keep players cool and dry, as well as a Jacquard ventilation system for comfort.
Athletic have not yet released the home kits for next season, but fans already have a good idea of what those shirts will look like following additional leaked images. The club is expected to announce the home kits before preseason training starts on 13 August.
