Athletic Haven’t Received Any Offers For Iago Herrerín
The transfer window is quiet. Following the pandemic which brought football to a halt, clubs have far less money to spend this summer and so far there haven’t been many moves. Athletic Club have already ruled out the possibility of making any signings before the start of the next season, but departures are also becoming a challenge.
Iago Herrerín has his mind set on joining a new club this summer after recently revealing that he’s asked to leave Athletic. The Basques have agreed to facilitate his exit, but only if a convincing offer is made. Herrerín has one year left on his contract with Athletic and the club has no intentions of losing him right now without any compensation.
“We can facilitate his departure whenever an offer comes,” Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta explained during a press conference last month. “I spoke with him and told him that he has one year left on his contract and is a competitive goalkeeper. As long as he brings us an offer we can negotiate a departure. He’s a good goalkeeper and is valuable in the market, so let’s hope that we can reach an agreement that’s good for everyone.”
Over the past few weeks Galatasaray have been regularly linked with a move for Herrerín to replace injured goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. However, the Turkish giants are said to only want a six-month loan and have yet to open talks with Athletic. Other clubs such as West Ham, Sporting CP, and some lower table La Liga clubs are also interested in signing Herrerín.
As an experienced goalkeeper that has played in Europe, Herrerín will be an attractive option for many clubs. The 32-year-old is confident that a move will come eventually, but for right now he must wait with the transfer window remaining open until October. If for some reason an offer doesn’t come, Iago Herrerín would likely see out the final year of his contract with Athletic.
