Athletic Club Willing To Let Iago Herrerín Leave On Loan Under Certain Conditions
Days after Iago Herrerín reveled that he had asked to leave Athletic this summer, Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta provided more clarity on the situation. During a press conference Alkorta confirmed that Herrerín requested an exit and said that the club would help facilitate a move, but also made it clear that Athletic would only do so if an attractive offer was made.
With just one year left on his contract, and free to negotiate with other clubs in January, it’s unlikely that anyone will be making a good offer for Herrerín. Instead, a loan is the most likely option. Turkish giants Galatasaray have been heavily linked with a six-month loan move for Herrerín over the past week to replace the injured Fernando Muslera.
Athletic had hoped to sell Herrerín, but would consider a loan agreement under certain circumstances. According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Athletic will allow Herrerín to leave on loan if the other club pays the 32-year-old’s wages. Simply put, if Herrerín isn’t going to be wearing the Athletic shirt this season then the club doesn’t want him to be on the books.
There’s still a small chance that Herrerín stays at Athletic this season. The club will only let him leave if the conditions are right, but sources claim that a move could come this week. If so, Jokin Ezkieta would be permanently promoted to serve as the backup to Unai Simón. Iago Herrerín has likely played his final game for Athletic and his days in Bilbao are numbered.
