Leganés reportedly want to sign Iñigo Vicente on loan for the upcoming season (AC)

When Athletic report to preseason training on 13 August Iñigo Vicente will be given every opportunity to earn a place in the first team. It won’t be easy with so much competition and limited minutes to go around, but the 22-year-old is determined to prove himself.

Vicente’s loan spell with Mirandés last season was a massive success. Playing under Andoni Iraola, the starlet took a big step forward in his development as he ended the season with 5 goals and 7 assists over 35 appearances. Iraola has spoken very highly of Vicente and believes that he has what it takes to stay at San Mamés next season.

“I’m very happy with Iñigo,” Iraola said during an interview with Onda Vasca back in early June. “Every time he plays, either from the start or coming off the bench, he gives us everything. He’s a player who can earn his place at Athletic next year.” Vicente may have the quality and indeed the magic, but a first team role isn’t guaranteed.

Failing to convince Gaizka Garitano will likely result in spending another year away on loan. Several clubs are said to be monitoring the situation closely and there’s a chance that Vicente could be reunited with Iraola next season.

According to a report from Víctor Polo who covers the Segunda B, Leganés have already shown interest in signing Vicente on loan for the upcoming season. The news comes at the same time as Iraola being heavily linked with the Leganés coaching job, although Athletic and Leganés have always had a strong relationship with players like Unai Bustinza and Javi Eraso having worn both shirts.

If the decision is made for Vicente to go out on loan again there will be no shortage of clubs queuing up in hopes of negotiating a deal. However, Iñigo Vicente isn’t even considering that at the moment and has every intention of fighting for a permanent place in the first team this summer.
