Galatasaray Step Up As Possible Destination For Iago Herrerín
Between now and the start of next season Iago Herrerín will be looking for a way out of Athletic. The 32-year-old goalkeeper recently shared with El Correo that he’s asked to leave the club and claimed that Athletic have agreed to facilitate his exit. It’s unclear whether or not the final year of Herrerín’s contract will be terminated or if Athletic will hold out for a transfer fee from another club, but an exit appears definite.
Back in March, Herrerín told Mundo Deportivo that he’s already received an offer for next season, but the interested club is unknown. As a goalkeeper who has competed in Europe there should be no shortage of suitors for Herrerín. Leaving will surely depend on how Athletic want to handle the situation, but one club has already been linked with a move for the Lezama product.
Süper Lig giants Galatasaray are said to be interested in signing Herrerín, this according to Endika Río of Mundo Deportivo who shared a report from Şafak Malatya claiming that the Turkish club has already made an offer to the goalkeeper. With Fernando Muslera likely out for the rest of the year due to a fractured tibia and fibula, Galatasaray view Herrerín as a top option to take over between the sticks.
Rumors of Galatasaray’s interest in Herrerín began to circulate earlier this month and have been growing stronger, intensifying after the interview with El Correo. Iago Herrerín’s public statements about his unhappiness in Bilbao have made it clear that his time with Athletic has come to an end and soon he could be on his way to play football in Turkey.
