Gaizka Larrazabal To Leave On Loan This Summer
Gaizka Larrazabal’s debut season with the first team didn’t go as planned. Despite playing in 5 of the first 9 games of the campaign, the young winger finished the year with just 11 appearances and a total of 326 minutes. Larrazabal had hoped for more, but that wasn’t the case.
As the son of club legend Aitor Larrazabal, Gaizka wants to establish himself with Athletic and enjoy a career at San Mamés. In fact, the 23-year-old had options to leave on loan back in January with the manager’s approval, but rejected the offers because he valued staying in the team.
With just one year left on his contract, the upcoming season will be crucial for Larrazabal’s future at the club. Larrazabal needs regular playing time to continue improving and convince the manager, but that likely won’t happen at Athletic with so many other players competing at the same position. Ultimately, spending the season away on loan may be the best thing for him.
According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Athletic intend to send Larrazabal out on loan this season to a club in the Segunda. Real Zaragoza, Ponferradina, and Rayo Vallecano were all interested in signing Larrazabal in January, though there’s likely to be more suitors this summer. Athletic will be patient in trying to find the best place for the starlet to enjoy consistent minutes, but all signs do point towards Gaizka Larrazabal spending the year away.
