Barcelona Turned Away By Yuri Berchiche’s €100 Million Release Clause

Yuri Berchiche’s second season with Athletic was incredible. In 39 appearances Berchiche scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists while establishing himself as a premier left-back in Europe. As one of the top player in his position, it comes as no surprise that other clubs have taken notice.

Following his stellar season at San Mamés, Berchiche has caught the attention of Barcelona, per Miguel Rico of Mundo Deportivo. The Catalans are said to be interested in signing Berchiche to compete with Jordi Alba, but he won’t be going anywhere.

Barcelona are unwilling, and possibly unable, to pay Berchiche’s €100 million release clause. Furthermore, Athletic’s history of refusing to negotiate transfers and instead referring interested clubs to a player’s release clause means that Berchiche’s price is firm. Without being able to lower the asking price, Barcelona will have to look elsewhere for a left-back this summer.
