Signing Javi Martínez May Have To Wait Until Next Summer For Athletic Club
Athletic’s biggest goal of the summer transfer window is to sign Javi Martínez. Earlier this month Bayern Munich informed the midfielder that they wouldn’t be offering him a renewal with his contract set to expire next year and would instead look to sell him during the transfer window. The news gave more hope that Martínez would soon be on his way back to San Mamés. Sadly, the situation has become more complicated.
According to an exclusive report from Ander Cotorro of Marca, Bayern refuse to let Martínez leave for free which makes a return to Athletic difficult. Due to the pandemic and missing out on Europe, paying a transfer fee in addition to adding another high wage may not be possible for Athletic.
Furthermore, reports in Germany now claim that Bayern Munich will only part with Martínez if an enticing offer comes along as opposed to trying to facilitate a move. The 31-year-old could be set to stay at the club until next summer when his contract finally expires, at which point Athletic would have a far better chance of bringing him back to Bilbao.
It’s no secret that Javi Martínez is interested in returning to Athletic. For months the player and club have seemed destined for a reunion but, unless Athletic can afford a strong enough offer to convince Bayern Munich, it may have to wait until next year.
