Iker Muniain “We Lacked Intensity And That Can’t Happen”
Athletic may not have had anything to play for in the final game of the season, but captain Iker Muniain was still angry to lose 4-0 to Granada. Despite a strong start, Athletic conceded the first goal and were unmotivated for the rest of the match. Coming away with no points wasn’t a surprise, but Muniain made it clear that the performance was unacceptable.
“We started with a clear opportunity for Villalibre that we weren’t able to score and then they went ahead,” Muniain told Athletic TV after the game. “We lacked intensity and that can’t happen. We weren’t risking anything, but when you go out on the field you have to be into it for 90 minutes. We’re sad because in the previous game we lost at home and that kept us from coming here and playing for sixth place.”
The Lions missed out on Europe once again this season, but could still lift a trophy. “We would have liked to finish differently, playing for Europe, which was the goal we had in the league,” Muniain concluded. “As for the Cup, it’s a goal that can still be accomplished, but the pain and the pity is that we don’t have a European place.”
The Cup final has been postponed until fans are allowed to attend, but the game has yet to be scheduled. Recent reports claim that the Spanish Football Federation would like to have the final sometime around Christmas, though it’s impossible to look too far into the future right now following the pandemic. Regardless of when it takes place, Athletic will have the chance to win a title.
