Gaizka Garitano “We Have To End The Season With A Win”
Athletic won’t be playing in Europe next season. Thursday’s loss to Leganés prevented the Basques from being able to finish in the top seven, but there’s still once game left to play. To close out the campaign Gaizka Garitano’s side will be traveling to Granada on Sunday in hopes of securing a finish in the top half of the La Liga table.
“On Friday we were disappointed, but today we’re more animated because this is our life,” Garitano explained during Saturday’s press conference. “I have never seen a discouraged person do something relevant in their life. We’re already encouraged again to finish the league with the best possible feelings.”
Although a spot in Europe won’t be on the line, Athletic can still finish as high as 8th which would come with €14 million in prize money. Garitano will be making some changes to the lineup, but the team will be eager to end the season on a high note.
“We’re playing with professionalism and there is a lot of money depending on the position in which you finish the league. We’re playing for a lot. We’re always trying to be the best team and win each game so this time will be no different. Regarding the lineup, we will make five or six changes to give freshness. We have to end the season with a win.”
A few players such as Ander Capa, Yeray, and Yuri Berchiche are carrying minor injuries and may not even see the field. On the other hand, those who haven’t had regular minutes could have a place in the starting lineup. Regardless of the lineup, Athletic have every intention of returning to Bilbao with all three points.
