Gaizka Garitano “The Result Is Cruel”
Athletic won’t be playing in Europe next season. The Basques needed a win on Thursday night against Leganés to keep pace in the battle for top seven, but fell 2-0 after Unai Simón was shown an early red card. Gaizka Garitano highlighted the team’s effort after the game, but realizes that it just wasn’t enough.
“It was our mistake in defense. A one against three put us down to ten. You pay for one of those mistakes. The team emptied their effort. We needed a win and in the last 25 minutes we opened the game and that allowed more space for Leganés. We needed to win, but Leganés defended very well and we weren’t able to do anything.”
Despite the disappointing result, Garitano was proud of the way his players fought for a result. The players put up a valiant effort, but were unable to take anything away from the match.
“The result is cruel. We played practically the entire game with one less player and gave everything, but we didn’t win. I don’t want to draw any conclusions. Anything I say would be very subjective. We’ve lacked attacking potential compared to opponents we’ve played. I’m very proud of the players. We have Granada next and we will go to win.”
With Europe now ruled out, Oihan Sancet and Dani Vivian will return to Bilbao Athletic who will play Badajoz on Saturday in the first round of the promotional playoffs. “We will provide everything possible, whatever they need,” said Garitano. Athletic will finish the season on Sunday with a trip to Granada.
