Kuko Ziganda’s Real Oviedo In Pursuit Of Athletic Striker Gorka Guruzeta
Gorka Guruzeta was one of the most promising players coming through Lezama when he was promoted to the first team back in 2018. The young striker was coming off of a tremendous season with Bilbao Athletic in which he scored 18 goals and showed that he was ready for a bigger challenge. Guruzeta would find it hard to have minutes in the first team and would eventually return to Bilbao Athletic in the second half of the season.
Unfortunately, Guruzeta would suffer a torn ACL during a match against Sporting and was ruled out for the rest of the year. This season the 23-year-old would finally be cleared to play again in November and rejoined Bilbao Athletic in order to have regular minutes to rediscover his form and help the Kumeak who were plagued with injuries at the time.
This weekend Bilbao Athletic will return to the field to play their first game of the promotional playoffs against Badajoz. Guruzeta is included in the squad for the tournament, but his future with the club is uncertain. With just one year left on his contract Guruzeta is hoping to put his injury in the past and prove that he can be a first team player.
Guruzeta will be given a chance to fight for a place in Gaizka Garitano’s team during the preseason, but it won’t be easy. Athletic already have plenty of players in attack, although Guruzeta is capable of playing anywhere across the front line and versatility is valuable to Garitano.
If Guruzeta isn’t able to convince the manager then he won’t be returning to Bilbao Athletic. The Lezama product will turn 24 next year and won’t be eligible for the team, nor does he need to spend another year at that level. The most likely scenario is that Guruzeta will leave on loan and he already has a suitor.
Real Oviedo manager Kuko Ziganda coached Guruzeta at Bilbao Athletic and wants to do so again. According to a report La Nueva España, Oviedo have already contacted Guruzeta over joining the club on loan next season so long as they achieve permanence in the second division.
For now Guruzeta is solely focused on helping Bilbao Athletic win the promotional playoffs. When the preseason begins the 23-year-old will fight for his place in the first team, but if that doesn’t happen then rejoining Kuko Ziganda could be just the thing to help Gorka Guruzeta take the next big step in his career.
