Raúl García has no plans to leave Athletic anytime soon and at 34 years old, he’s not even thinking about retirement. “I hope it’s a reality that I can continue here,” García said in an interview last month. At the moment, García is under contract for one more year but has been in sensational form since the season resumed. A renewal could be just around the corner.

According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Athletic are already preparing a renewal offer for García. Before preseason last year the forward signed a contract through 2021 that didn’t contain a release clause and a new deal would likely extend that until the end of the 2022 campaign. Talks are expected to go rather quickly with both sides keen on reaching an agreement as soon as possible.

“A renewal won’t just depend on me,” García explained in that June interview with DEIA. “It will also depend on the club deciding that I can continue and have the qualities to contribute. I’m calm and happy because to date my performances have been like those of previous years and I hope I can continue like this so that it’s not such a difficult decision for the club.”

Renewing García’s contract is an easy decision for Athletic. The 34-year-old is arguably in the best form of his career and currently leads the team with 15 goals this season. Over the past year Raúl García has transitioned from midfield to striker and has all the qualities to lead the attack for Athletic in the years ahead.
