Petronor To Return As Athletic Sponsor
As a club, Athletic took longer than most to introduce a private shirt sponsorship. In the past the Lions did sport rare, one-time sponsors but oil and gas company Petronor became the first official shirt sponsor in 2008. Initially, the agreement brought in €2 million for Athletic each season on a three-year contract.
The deal with Petronor would be extended and finally expired in 2015 when Athletic announced a sponsorship agreement with Kutxabank. Interestingly, Kutxabank are part owners of Petronor and have historically been a strong supporter of Athletic and played a significant role in the project to build the new San Mamés.
However, Athletic’s partnership with Kutxabank appears to be coming to and end. The four-year deal signed back in 2015 contained an option to extend the contract for an addition season, that being the current one, but so far there’s been no indication that Athletic will be renewing the agreement further. The deal is set to expire at the end of the month.
With Kutxabank’s time as shirt sponsor coming to an end, it looks as though Petronor could be returning to the fold. According to a report from Juanma Velasco of Marca, Athletic and Petronor plan to announce a new collaboration agreement on Monday at San Mamés. Given the timing and situation with Kutxabank, the natural assumption is that Petronor is returning as the official shirt sponsor for Athletic Club.
