Javi Martinez is one step closer to returning to Athletic. The midfielder originally left the Basque giants in 2012 to join Bayern Munich and over the past year has been heavily linked with a move back to San Mamés. For months reports ensured that Bayern planned to sell Martinez this summer with one year left on his contract which has opened the door for a possible reunion.

Earlier today WAZ reported that Bayern Munich have officially decided to sell Martinez this summer and will do everything possible to facilitate his transfer. The German side have already informed to the 31-year-old that he will not be offered a contract renewal and is allowed to begin negotiating with other clubs.

Eduardo Velasco of Telebilbao has since reported that Martinez’s agent is already in talks with Athletic over a possible two-year contract with the player clear that he wants the move. It’s no secret that Athletic want to bring the midfielder back to the club and Martinez has never hidden his interest in returning. “I could never say no to Athletic,” Martinez admitted back in April.

Former reports claim that Martinez hasn’t made up his mind on where he will play next. Athletic have always been considered the frontrunners for his signature, but the possibility of moving to the United States or Australia has also been mentioned. However, Martinez has flirted with the idea of going back to Athletic for the past 12 months and even visited Lezama back in November which was downplayed at the time.

At this point there is nothing official, but based on today’s news it appears as though Javi Martinez wants to wear the Zurigorri shirt once again and Athletic will do everything possible to make that happen. If the two sides are able to come to terms Athletic will only have to negotiate a fee with Bayern Munich to finalize the transfer.

The news comes on the same day that Athletic formally announced that Mikel San José and Beñat will be leaving the club at the end of the season. Both midfielders agreed to finish the campaign despite being out of contract on 30 June and will depart after the last game against Granada. Sometimes things are much more than mere coincidences.
