Yeray Ruled Out For The Rest Of The Season With Calf Injury

Gaizka Garitano wasn’t very hopeful that Yeray will play again this season. “I’ve talked to the doctors and it doesn’t look good,” the manager said following Athletic’s loss to Real Madrid. Yeray injured his calf while stretching to make a tackle and had to come off just 20 minutes into the game. “I’m not optimistic,” Garitano added.

Initially, the club announced that Yeray had been diagnosed with a calf injury while confirming that more tests will be carried out. Those tests were performed earlier today and Athletic have provided an update on the defender. The club confirmed that Yeray will miss the rest of the season with a “moderate muscular injury in the soleus muscle of his right leg.”

With just four games left to play, Unai Núñez will take Yeray’s place in the lineup. Núñez has been in good form since the season resumed, but Yeray’s absence presents another problem. Iñigo Martinez is currently one booking away from suspension and a yellow card would leave Athletic in a difficult position.
