Yeray Leaves Real Madrid Match Early With Calf Injury
Gaizka Garitano wasn’t taking any chances in Sunday’s clash with Real Madrid. Although some expected the manager to rest a number of key players in preparation for upcoming games, Garitano fielded his preferred lineup. The Lions would start strong, making things very difficult for the league leaders, but Garitano would be forced to make a change very early on.
After just 20 minutes Unai Núñez would come on for Yeray who appeared to have sustained an injury. It was unclear what had happened to the 25-year-old, but Yeray did have to overextend earlier in the game to make a tackle. Once he was on the bench Yeray was seen wearing a wrap on his right leg, further suggesting it could be a muscle injury.
Athletic have since provided a medical update on Yeray, stating that he had suffered a calf strain. Further tests will be carried out and it’s unclear how long Yeray will be sidelined. “I’ve talked to the doctors and it doesn’t look good,” manager Gaizka Garitano told reporters after the game. “I’m not optimistic.” Depending on the severity Yeray could miss time with just four games left this season.
