Iker Muniain Shares Frustrations Following Athletic’s Controversial Loss To Real Madrid
Iker Muniain was visibly upset following Athletic’s 1-0 loss to Real Madrid. The visitors had scored from a penalty in the second half after a VAR review, but moments later Sergio Ramos stepped on Raúl García’s ankle in the box and the play wasn’t even checked. Tempers flared in the final minutes and Muniain wasn’t afraid to address the controversy.
“We deserved a little more, at least a draw,” Muniain told reporters after the game. “I haven’t seen the replay of the penalty, but when it happened live it gave me the feeling that it wasn’t a penalty. Then they went to check. Raúl García also received a stamp and they didn’t even review it. We’ve already seen the theme in these weeks since the restart. Depending on which team it is, some decisions are given. Everyone can draw their own conclusions. One was reviewed and the other wasn’t. That’s the difference.”
In stoppage time Muniain was shown a yellow card for throwing his body into a challenge with Luca Modric. “I went into a challenge and hit him with my shoulder,” said the captain. “The referee interpreted that I went in with more force than normal, but it was an action without malice.”
Regardless of the defeat, Muniain ensures that the team is proud of their performance. “We’re very satisfied with our work and effort, but we deserved a little more. We played well, along the lines of the last two games. Despite the defeat, we have to keep our heads high for the next match. Each point will be gold.”
Athletic must now start preparing for Thursday night’s match against Sevilla. The Zurigorri currently Europe by two points which will make the final four games of the season must-win fixtures.
