The Athletic players were furious following the 1-0 loss to Real Madrid on Sunday. The lone goal came as a result of a Real Madrid penalty after a VAR review. Dani García tried to win the ball in the box and stepped on Marcelo, but moments later Sergio Ramos stamped on Raúl García’s ankle and the play wasn’t even checked.

“You can’t say that one is intentional and the other isn’t,” García said on social media. “I see that I have won the challenge and, unluckily, I stepped on him. At no time do I see it possible for him to get the ball before me. If one is whistled, the other should be also. VAR is taking over football.”

García wasn’t the only one to take to social media. Iñaki Williams, Unai López, and Yeray all commented on García’s post in agreement while Ander Capa posted on his Instagram page showing both fouls together with the caption, “I don’t understand anything.”

Fellow teammates Iñaki Williams, Ander Capa, and Unai López have also taken to social media to share their anger.

Athletic played an impressive game at San Mamés and deserved to take something away. Instead, the Lions had nothing to show for their performance and still sit two points off of Europe with just four games left on the schedule.
