Raúl García “The Goal Of Qualifying For Europe Is Important To Everyone”
Raúl García conquered Mestalla on Wednesday night, scoring two goals to lead Athletic to a 2-0 win over Valencia. It was the Zurigorri’s first win at Mestalla in over four years and the three points saw Athletic move up to seventh in the La Liga table. As García explained after the game, the team is more motivated than ever to qualify for Europe and everyone has come together to fight for the objective.
“The team is hungry. We knew that after the break it was going to be a very fast competition and we’ve been going full blast from the start. We are serious. When we came back there were eleven games left and it was a mini-season, to say the least. We trust the group, we all contribute, and it’s working. Those who start have done well, but those who come on later have also helped a lot.”
Despite scoring both goals in the win, García didn’t want any of the praise. Instead, he focused on the team’s performance as a whole which was arguably the best of the season thus far.
“In the end, my success is because of the team. I’m was lucky enough to be able to do my job in the best way. We knew that it was an important day to take a step forward and we came out with everything from the beginning. I shouldn’t be praised, I run away from all that. I understand that this is a team sport. My teammates help me and, in turn, I’m happy to help the team. We must continue along this line to be where we want to be.
Throughout the season Athletic have been one of the hardest teams to play against and part of the success comes from the unity within the group. “We’ve always trusted in each other,” said García. “We’re a group of friends, so to speak. We fight with everything we have. The goal of qualifying for Europe is important to everyone.” Now Athletic must prepare for another challenge with Real Madrid visiting San Mamés on Sunday.
