Mikel Vesga has played a pivotal role in the Athletic team since the season returned. When not starting, the 27-year-old has come on in the second half to bring strength and stability to the midfield. Vesga did so once again on Wednesday to help the Lions close out an impressive 2-0 win over Valencia.

“For us it was a very important win today and, for now, we’re in seventh place,” Vesga said after the game. “The most important thing is the team’s work, how we played today, and the sensations we give, not only today, but also in previous matches.”

Once again Athletic scored an early goal which proved to be the winner. As a whole, it was arguably the team’s best performance of the season.

“The team played a very serious game. We had talked about starting strong and I think the team showed it. From here we will fight to keep our position. Nobody had won here and it wasn’t easy, so what we did today has great merit. We’re very happy.”

Staying in the top seven won’t be easy. “We know that the next two games are important for us and that we’ll play both at San Mamés,” said Vesga. “Today is a tremendous joy for us, especially because of what is coming next.” Having taken all three points back to Bilbao the Zurigorri will try to add more on Sunday against Real Madrid.
