Athletic Given Day Off Following Barcelona Loss

Athletic enjoyed a rare day off on Wednesday (AC)

Like other clubs, Athletic were immediately thrust into a race for fitness when teams were given permissions to return to training. While La Liga worked on plans to resume the season every team had to overcome two months without playing to get back into proper football shape. Since then, there’s been little time for rest.

At the beginning Athletic were given Sunday’s off but once the season returned the Lions were either training or playing a game every single day. Fatigue has been an issue for every player and the squad was finally given the day off on Monday following the loss to Barcelona.

Athletic have a slightly longer break in between games than usual with Mallorca set to visit San Mamés on Friday. Gaizka Garitano took advantage of the schedule to give his players a much-needed day of rest to recharge ahead of what will be a grueling stretch of games. Having also rested several key players against Barcelona, there will be no excuse for the Basques to not take all three points at home this weekend.

The squad will be back in training at Lezama on Thursday and Friday before hosting Mallorca on Saturday. Afterwards, Athletic will immediately turn their sights to Wednesday’s trip to Valencia which will be one of the biggest games of the season and could have massive implications in the race for Europe.
