Bayern Munich Coach Hansi Flick Says Athletic Target Javi Martinez “Has To Decide” His Future
For months reports in Germany have made it clear that Bayern Munich plan to sell Javi Martinez at the end of the season. With one year left on his deal the club doesn’t want to lose him for free, but have no intentions of offering the 31-year-old a renewal. The writing is on the wall, however manager Hansi Flick wouldn’t confirm that Martinez will soon be on his way out.
“When Javi plays he does it with all his heart,” Flick told Sport1 following Bayern’s 3-1 win over Freiburg. “You like to see that as a coach. He helps the team with good experience. He’s at a certain age and knows that the competition here is fierce. He has to decide. We’re not discussing these things at the moment in such detail.”
Flick’s comments seem to suggest that Martinez will be the one to decide whether or not he stays at the club, but the club is said to be looking to cash in on the veteran when the season comes to an end. Athletic have been most heavily linked with a move for Martinez as the Basques hope to bring him back to San Mamés. On that note, Javi Martinez has never been shy about his interest in returning to Athletic one day.
