Iñigo Córdoba has always spoken highly of his brother, Asier. The youngest of three brothers, Asier Córdoba joined Lezama in 2010 and was always one of the best players in his age group. However, after being promoted to Bilbao Athletic last season the young winger hasn’t had the prominence in the team that was expected. Over two years he’s made just 19 appearances while others have been given more important roles.

“I try to help Asier see that it’s complicated, that he has to work hard to get here,” Iñigo said in an interview back in November. “Of course, we hope that we can share the field at Athletic in the future. The line between those who make it and those who don’t is a cluster of things.”

Although Asier has flashed potential at times he’s never been able to take that next important step during his two seasons with Bilbao Athletic. Looking ahead to next year he’s well aware that minutes could be even harder to come by with starlets Nico Serrano and Nico Williams both joining the team.

Córdoba’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and Athletic have offered the 20-year-old a renewal, but he’s instead chosen to leave the club in search of regular playing time and the chance to continue his development. According to a report from Marca, Córdoba has already agreed to a two-year contract with Osasuna while Alavés also showed interest.

Joining Osasuna will give Córdoba the opportunity to fight for more consistent minutes and the club is said to be very high on the winger. It’s believed that he will be given the chance to fight for a place in the first team with Osasuna confident that he could one day play an important role at El Sadar.

Historically, players have made the move from Osasuna to Athletic but Córdoba will be going in the other direction. The Lezama product is full of potential and hopes a change of scenery will help him get back to playing his best football. Moving forward Asier Córdoba will call Osasuna home, but there’s always a chance that he could one day return to Athletic Club.
