Raúl García “We Went Out For The Match With Everything”
Athletic’s quest for Europe began on Sunday as the team returned to action for the first time in three months. Atlético Madrid visited San Mamés, but even though the match was played behind closed doors the Lions put in a stellar performance at home. The game would ultimately end in a 1-1 draw and midfielder Raúl García was pleased with the result.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” García told Athletic TV after the match. “There was some uncertainty as to how the two teams would be physically, regardless of how much you train, but you have compete. We’ve shown that we wanted to win because we went out for the match with everything. The team has shown its face and we were able to get an important point.”
Iker Muniain opened the scoring in the 37th minute after a brilliant attacking sequence, but Atlético would level just moments later. “It’s football, we know that we have to be focused,” said García. “We will correct things, but you also have to build on the positive things. We hadn’t competed for a long time and the team wanted to push forward from the beginning.”
No one really knew how the teams would look after such a long break, but Athletic’s performance was exceptional. “Everyone was at the level we expected, but we are sure to go further. We’re going to do more. There are eleven games in a row so we have to recover quickly and think about the next game. There are important objectives at stake.” Athletic must now turn their attention to Wednesday’s trip to Eibar.
