Iñigo Martinez “We’re Happy, But It Could Have Been A Better Result”
Iñigo Martinez was one of the best players on the field Sunday as Athletic played Atlético Madrid to a 1-1 draw. The 29-year-old was excellent in defense, stopping several attacks, and even contributed going forward when Athletic settled into possession. After the game Martinez spoke with Athletic TV where he agreed that the final result was fair.
“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy at all against a team like that, but it was a shame not to have endured the result after we scored. It’s a fair point and we can do well in the next game. It lacked a bit of rhythm, but we will be moving forward and improving. Tomorrow we will return to Lezama to begin recovering little by little and to analyze the next opponent.”
When asked about playing behind closed doors Martinez admitted it didn’t feel right. However, the team was able to overcome the challenge and put in a solid performance.
“It was strange. The fans give us a lot and we didn’t have them, but the team was still plugged in and the performance was quite good. This was the first game back and it’s not easy against a team like Atlético. We’re happy, but it could have been a better result. It could have finished differently but it’s a point to continue upwards for our goal. Th team did well so let’s rest and think about the next game.”
Athletic will have little time to rest. The Zurigorri will travel to Ipurua on Wednesday for a Basque Derby against Eibar. For now, Athletic remain five points off of Europe and are eager to take all three points to continue climbing the table.
