Napoli Reportedly Contact Athletic Over Yeray Interest

Yeray Alaves

Yeray recently signed a new contract through 2026 (AC)

Since breaking into the Athletic first team back in 2014 Yeray has become one of La Liga’s top center-backs. His partnership with Iñigo Martínez may be the best in the league and it comes as no surprise that other clubs have taken notice. Last summer Atlético Madrid wanted to sign the defender, but Yeray rejected the approach and signed a renewal with Athletic.

Yeray extended his deal through 2026, the longest contract at the club, and increased his release clause to €70 million. “My heart has been red and white since I was born,” he said at the time. “Since I was a child my adventure has always been with the Athletic shirt and it will be for many more years.”

Nearly one year later Yeray’s success continues to attract the eyes of other clubs. According to a report from Javier Beltrán of AS, Napoli are interested in signing Yeray and have even contacted Athletic to ask about a possible transfer. As expected, Athletic told the Italians that they have no intention of selling Yeray and referred them to his release clause.

The interest shows that Yeray is playing at a high level and doing things well. However, his future is still with Athletic. The combination of his high release clause, commitment to Athletic, and the financial impact of the recent pandemic almost certainly means that Napoli will have to turn their attention elsewhere. Yeray has been with Athletic since 2008 when he joined Lezama at 13 years old.
