Iñigo Lekue Returns To Training But Will Miss Atlético Madrid Match
Athletic have been relatively fortunate in terms of injuries since returning to training five weeks ago. Apart from Iñigo Lekue, who suffered an ankle sprain on 23 May, the squad is healthy and ready to host Atlético Madrid on Sunday. With just days until the Lions are back in action Lekue is also close to being cleared to play.
On Wednesday the 27-year-old was seen warming up with his teammates and participating in the passing drills. This is always the first major step towards being fully incorporated back into the squad. Although Lekue won’t be available for the Atlético clash at San Mamés there is hope that he won’t be sidelined for much longer.
Lekue and others could greatly benefit from the cautionary changes made to finish the La Liga season. In addition to match day squads being increased from 18 players to 23, coaches will also be allowed a total of 5 substitutions. The schedule will be densely packed with Athletic playing four games in ten days, meaning depth will be more important than ever.
