Yuri Berchiche And Iñigo Córdoba One Booking Away From Suspension
Football hasn’t been played for three months but the season will finally return on Thursday. Teams have been training for the last few weeks and the entire situation feels similar to that of preseason, but eleven games are still on the schedule. With 33 points left to play for each fixture will be a final and losing a player could be disastrous.
For Athletic, two players are currently one booking away from suspension. Yuri Berchiche and Iñigo Córdoba are both sitting on four yellows cards and would miss the next game if cautioned by the referee in Sunday’s match against Atlético Madrid. Aritz Aduriz had three cards himself, but recently announced his retirement due to the need for hip surgery.
On the other hand, Unai Núñez and Ander Capa both served a one-game suspension for yellow cards in the final game before the stoppage. The two defenders will start this last stage of the season with a clean slate. Beginning this weekend the Basques will play four games in ten day, a grueling schedule, as Gaizka Garitano’s side aim to secure a top seven finish and qualify for Europe.
