Gorka Iraizoz Set To Join Aitor Larrazabal’s Staff At Barakaldo As Goalkeeper Coach
Gorka Iraizoz may not have ended his career at Athletic, but he remains one of the greatest goalkeepers in club history with the third-most appearances behind only José Ángel Iribar and Carmelo Cedrún. The Pamplona native retired from football at the end of last season following Girona’s relegation, but isn’t finished with the beautiful game.
Several reports in the Basque Country claim that Iraizoz will be joining Aitor Larrazabal’s coaching staff at Barakaldo as the goalkeeper coach. If so, this would be his first ever coaching role. After a storied career, Iraizoz has the experience and knowledge necessary to excel at Barakaldo.
The arrival of Iraizoz would be exciting for Barakaldo, as is the return of Larrazabal who managed the club from 2017-2019 and enjoyed immense success. Larrazabal, who spent his entire career with Athletic and is widely regarded as the club’s greatest ever left-back, is no stranger to including former Athletic players in his coaching staff.
During Larrazabal’s first stint with Barakaldo the goalkeeper coach was none other than Iñaki Lafuente who graduated from Lezama and spent 9 seasons with Athletic. Lafuente was unable to return to Barakaldo with Larrazabal as he returned to Lezama last summer as a youth goalkeeper coach.
