Javi Martinez’s future with Bayern Munich looks to be coming to and end. Although the midfielder continues to say that he’s been told that he’s an important part of the team, reports in Germany constantly claim that the club plans to sell Martinez when the season ends. Athletic would love to bring Martinez back to Bilbao this summer, but the veteran is keeping his options open.

“I have to sit down and talk to Bayern,” Martinez answered when asked if he’s made a decision about his future during an interview with Miguel Ángel Lara of AS. “My contract ends in 2021 and I’m ready for anything. What I have experienced here has been great. Right now I have to wait because there’s a lot of uncertainty. We don’t know if there will be a market of if the Champions League will be played.”

Having joined Bayern Munich in 2012, Martinez has spent nearly a decade in Germany. He admits that being away from Spain and the Basque Country for so long has made him miss home.

“You don’t realize what you have until you lose it, as the saying goes. You realize how we live back home, the warmth of the people. Germany is incredible and Spain has many things to envy, but it’s also true the other way around.”

Martinez doesn’t know for sure if he will leave Bayern, but if so he will consider every option available.

“If it happens I’m open to everything. My ideas are anything that fills me on a sporting level and personally. I can play and live in the United States, in Australia, or go back to Spain. I think I can still play great football. I’m open to everything. Athletic? I lived six incredible years in Bilbao, of course it’s an option.”

Athletic have been the club most strongly linked with a move for Martinez and the Zurigorri haven’t been shy about their interest. Bringing Javi Martinez back to San Mamés would be a huge victory for the Basques who could significantly improve their chances of convincing the 31-year-old by qualifying for Europe this season.
