The return of football next week presents Athletic with a challenging opportunity. As the Lions currently sit five points off of seventh place, the team will have the remaining eleven games to fight for European qualification. It will be far from easy, but defender Yuri Berchiche is confident that it can happen.

“Qualifying for Europe is the objective that we, the players and coaches, have set and we will go for it with everything,” Berchiche said during Thursday’s press conference. “We have 33 points at stake and we’re only behind by five. Of course we can qualify. It can be done.”

The remaining games will have to be played behind closed doors, which will make games very different. However, Berchiche points out that everyone will have to deal with the same challenges.

“It’s an important factor to take into account. We’re going to see empty stands and it looks like the temperatures will be high, but we are prepared to overcome all of those adversities. The good thing about this is that the conditions are the same for everyone. Whoever adapts quicker will gain an advantage. We’re already very psyched for the first game against a great team like Atlético.”

Despite the difficulties, Berchiche made it clear that the team will have no reason to complain regardless of the outcome. Fighting for Europe is the only goal and the Basques are singularly focused on accomplishing that objective.

“It will be the same for everyone. There’s no excuse, not even talking about field conditions, heat, fans, or the number of substitutions. It’s clear that Real Madrid and Barcelona have the best players on the field, but every team has very good squads. We’re prepared because football demands more and more and that the players be better and better.”

Athletic will be back in action on 14 June when the Zurigorri host Atlético Madrid at an empty San Mamés. No one knows what to expect with football having been on a break for so long, but Athletic are determined to get a positive result to quickly start moving up the table.
