Mikel San José Prefers To Stay In La Liga After Contract Expires
Mikel San José has devoted his life to Athletic Club. Aside from a short stint with the Liverpool reserves from 2007-2009, the midfielder has spent his entire career with Athletic and was a key contributor in the team for the past decade. However, his time at San Mamés appears to be coming to an end with San José’s contract set to expire at the end of the season.
The club hasn’t offered San José a renewal and despite Gaizka Garitano’s recent remarks that the 31-year-old can still earn an extension during the final 11 games of the season, the writing is on the wall. San José has only featured sparingly under Garitano and with younger players like Peru Nolaskoain and Unai Vencedor ready to join the first team he won’t have a place in the squad.
Unlike Markel Susaeta who chose to move to another country after leaving the club last season, San José aims to stay in Spain. The Lezama product has already turned down offers from abroad, including China, Japan, Turkey, and Qatar, and prefers to stay close to home. In fact, Javier Beltrán of AS has reported that San José rejected an offer from China back in January because he wanted to finish his contract with Athletic and wasn’t interested in leaving just for higher wages.
San José won’t have to look far for options to stay La Liga. A number of Primera clubs have already reached out to him including Eibar, Osasuna, and Real Valladolid. Ultimately, Mikel San José will have the freedom to choose his next destination. Although he will always remain an Athletic supporter and Socio, he doesn’t feel the need to leave the country in order to avoid facing his former club next season.
