Gaizka Garitano Signs Contract Renewal With Athletic Club Through 2021
Gaizka Garitano will continue as Athletic manager for one more season. The Mister has had the backing and confidence of the Board since day one and on Sunday the club officially announced that Garitano has signed a contract renewal through 2021. His previous deal was set to expire at the end of the season, but the plan was always to finalize an agreement during the final stage of the campaign.
“I am very happy to continue with this project and for the confidence that has always been shown in me from the club,” Garitano told Athletic TV. “Leading this team is a joy and a great responsibility.”
Having grown up an Athletic fan, Garitano is very excited to continue as manager for another season. The Mister took a moment to thank everyone for what is a day of celebration for him.
“Athletic is the team I have supported since I was little, the team of my heart. It’s a day to thank everyone. The president, for his trust, Alkorta, all of the club’s workers that make it possible for Athletic to have this prestige and greatness, the Lezama employees, the technical staff, the players, because without them it would be impossible, and above all the fans who help us in difficult times.”
With La Liga set to resume on 11 June, Athletic will have eleven games left to try to finish in the top seven. Although Garitano usually prefers not to publicly discuss goals, he explained that the Lions have their eyes on Europe.
“The experience that we’ve lived in this year’s Cup is magnificent and we have the opportunity to win a title. You have to stay with the positive things and try to improve each day. The team’s objective in these last eleven games is clear. We will try to qualify for Europe.”
Not all fans have been supportive of Garitano, mainly due to the coach’s defensive style of football. However, the numbers show that Garitano has been one of the club’s best managers in recent history. In addition to taking Athletic to the Copa del Rey final, Garitano has earned 79 of a possible 153 points, 51.6% of the available points, which is the second highest percentage of any manager in the last 25 years.
Gaizka Garitano will lead Athletic in the Cup final next season, but for now the manager is focused on the current campaign and fighting for a top seven finish.
