Aritz Aduriz suffered from an injured left hip over the last few years which ultimately forced him to announce his retirement last week. The striker, who will turn 40 in February, wanted to continue playing until the Copa del Rey final but unfortunately that wasn’t possible. “My body has had enough,” he said when explaining that he had been informed by doctors that he would need hip replacement surgery as soon as possible.

The club legend underwent the procedure on Saturday and Athletic have since announced that the surgery was a complete success without any complications. A prosthesis was inserted and Aduriz will spend the next 4-5 days recovering with the possibility of being discharged on Wednesday.

Unlike former injuries, Aduriz no longer has to worry about trying to work to get back on the field quickly. After playing through immense pain for the past couple of years the club legend can now simply focus on making a full recovery and enjoying a normal life without the demand of football on his body.

During his farewell press conference Aduriz did make it clear that he wants to be with the group for the remainder of the season. Whether visiting Lezama for training sessions or accompanying the team during matches, Aritz Aduriz hopes to be able to support his teammates and help in any way that he can as Athletic aim to finish in the top seven of the La Liga table and qualify for Europe.
