Athletic Club Willing To Wait For Martín Merquelanz
Martín Merquelanz has been reborn at Anduva. Following two serious knee injuries, the Real Sociedad product joined Mirandés on loan this season where he has exploded with 13 goals and 10 assists. It comes as no surprise that Merquelanz already has offers from other clubs and La Real are hoping to convince the 24-year-old to sign a renewal with his current deal set to expire in June of 2021.
For the past five months Real Sociedad have been trying to convince Merquelanz to sign a renewal, but so far their efforts have fallen on deaf ears. With so many others players currently in his position, Merquelanz likely won’t have a place in the team next season and is strongly considering an exit when his contract runs out.
Athletic have been one of the club most interested in signing Merquelanz, but the Lions have no intentions of paying the winger’s €50 million release clause. Instead, Athletic are willing to wait until January when they would be free to negotiate with Merquelanz in the final months of his contract. Merquelanz is well aware of the fact that Athletic are interested, among other options as well.
According to a report from Iago Barcia of El Correo, Athletic have already informed Merquelanz’s representatives that they would be willing to offer him a contract when his deal with Real Sociedad expires. At this point the attacker has the opportunity to choose what to do next with the goal of playing in the Primera. If La Real are unable to convince Martín Merquelanz to sign a renewal, he could be on his way to San Mamés after next season.
