Peru Nolaskoain “It’s Been A Difficult Year, But A Year Of Learning”
Peru Nolaskoain has enjoyed the most success of every Athletic player away on loan this season, but his time with Deportivo has also been challenging. Just after the start of the campaign the 21-year-old had to have an emergency appendectomy and would miss over a month. Once Nolaskoain was cleared to play again he quickly earned a starting role and has impressed in 25 appearances.
“It’s been a difficult year, but it’s been a year of learning.” Nolaskoain said during an interview with La Opinión A Coruña. Nolaskoain’s success with Deportivo could see him earn a regular place in the Athletic squad next season, though if that doesn’t happen he would be open to returning to A Coruña.
“Right now I want to think about these last eleven games and after the season we will see what happens. I have friends at Deportivo and I’m very fond of the city. If I return to Athletic and see that I will need to leave again on loan it would be a good place to continue to tell the truth.”
Since his transition from midfield to center-back last season Nolaskoain has often been asked which position he prefers. “The important thing is to help the team and it helps wins games I will play anywhere, but if it were up to me I would choose to play in the midfield.” For the most part Nolaskoain has featured in midfield for Deportivo.
In the end, Nolaskoain is just happy to be back in training. After nearly two month of quarantine Deportivo have begun preparing for the restart of the Segunda season which is expected next month.
“It’s been a joy to see teammates again. There’s a good group, the Basques and some others, and I missed seeing them. Personally it’s been very hard, much harder than a preseason. Now there are eleven games left. The truth is that the training sessions have been tough and we have few hours to rest because we’re doing double sessions.”
Peru Nolaskoain has been one of the best players at his position in the Segunda this season. With Beñat and Mikel San José both set to leave Athletic the 21-year-old will have a prime opportunity to earn his place at San Mamés next year.
