Alex Berenguer Quickly Becoming Athletic Club’s Top Transfer Target
Athletic’s interest in signing Javi Martinez is no secret. The Lions want to bring the 31-year-old back to San Mamés during the next transfer window and may be able to do so with Bayern Munich planning to sell the Martinez who will be entering the final year of his contract. However, the club may have an even bigger priority when the season ends.
Alex Berenguer has been on Athletic’s radar since his early days with Osasuna. Athletic tried to sign the winger in 2017 but Osasuna refused to sell him for less than his release clause. In the end, Berenguer joined Torino where he has continued to attract interest while developing into a talented player in Italy.
The interest in Berenguer has only continued to grow and sources close to the club claim the 24-year-old is quickly becoming Athletic’s top transfer target. Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta is said to be a great admirer of Berenguer and wants to bring the Osasuna product to San Mamés in the upcoming window.
Recent reports suggest that Berenguer could be available for somewhere between €8-10 million, though his contract with Torino does contain an anti-Athletic clause required by Osasuna as part of his transfer. If Torino were to sell Berenguer to Athletic the Italian side would have to pay Osasuna a fee of €1.5 million.
Athletic already have a surplus of wingers in the squad going into next season, but Berenguer has the quality to challenge for a starting role in Gaizka Garitano’s team. Alex Berenguer scored 5 goals and provided 3 assists in 24 games for Torino before the football stoppage and could be set for a move to Bilbao in the coming months.
