Mikel San José And Beñat Will Leave Athletic At The End Of The Season
Silence has told the entire story. For months Athletic has remained quiet about the futures of Mikel San José and Beñat with Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta routinely claiming that no decisions have been made. The club wanted to wait until later in the season to choose whether or not the midfielders deserved new contracts, but the writing has been on the wall.
When asked about their futures, San José and Beñat have always given the same answer. They’ve heard nothing from the club. However, with talents like Oihan Sancet, Unai Vencedor, and Peru Nolaskoain all ready for permanent first team roles it’s been clear that San José and Beñat’s time in Bilbao is coming to an end.
According to several reports in the Basque Country, San José and Beñat were informed during a team meeting on Thursday that they would not be offered contract renewals. The decision was made by Rafa Alkorta and manager Gaizka Garitano, but it won’t be publicly announced until after Garitano signs his own new contract. However, both are expected to continue with Athletic until the end of the current season with their deals set to expire on 30 June.
The news has seemingly been confirmed by former captain and current Lezama coach Carlos Gurpegui. Basque journalist Beñat Zarrabeitia tweeted out a picture of San José and Beñat’s shirts which Gurpegui commented on saying, “Big two, huge I would say, all the luck in the world for both.”
San José has already been contacted by a number of teams from La Liga and could join Eibar next season who have shown the most interest in signing the 30-year-old. Beñat, on the other hand, is believed to be interested in playing in another country and following a path similar to his friend and former teammate Markel Susaeta.
