Three La Liga Clubs Have Reportedly Contacted Athletic Midfielder Mikel San José
All signs point to Mikel San José and Beñat leaving Athletic at the end of the season. The midfield pair will see their contracts expire when the campaign is over and although Sporting Director Rafa Alkorta maintains that the club is still waiting to make a decision, the writing is on the wall. With starlets such as Oihan Sancet, Unai Vencedor, and Peru Nolaskoain ready to fully join the first team time is running out for San José and Beñat.
The pair has combined for 639 appearances at Athletic and if they do leave the club there will be no shortage of options. Both would prefer to continue at San Mamés, but if that doesn’t happen San José would like to at least stay in La Liga. The 30-year-old has already be contacted by the likes of Eibar, Osasuna, and Real Valladolid according to a report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano El Correo.
On the other hand, Beñat is said to be interested in following the path of former teammate and friend Markel Susaeta. The midfielder would rather play outside of Spain and experience a new league and culture. Everything is dependent on whether or not the two veterans are offered contract renewals, though it looks increasingly likely that won’t be the case.
