Mikel Vesga “It Feels Similar To The Preseason”
It’s been five days since Athletic returned to training at Lezama and the players are readjusting after spending nearly two months in isolation. Working out at home has been good, but can’t replace being out on the field every day. Following Thursday’s session midfielder Mikel Vesga spoke with Athletic TV and explained how it feels to be back.
“We’ve been training at home for some time and your legs notice it. Little by little we are adapting. This is different than anything we could do in our homes. It can be said that the sensations are very good at the moment because it feels similar to the preseason. The good thing is that we have arrived in much better physical condition that what is normal at the beginning of the summer. We have worked well over these months.”
Despite the difficulty, training at home was beneficial during the stoppage. “The training at home has helped us to be in quite good physical shape, but when you come back to Lezama and you jump on the field the exercises are different,” said Vesga. “You start to touch the ball and that’s when your legs start to suffer a little.”
La Liga aims to resume games by 12 June, though it could take longer. When the season does return Athletic will have 11 games to fight for a top seven finish and European qualification.
“We will have many games in a short period of time. Above all else, we’re going to have to very strong mentally because it’s going to be a hard month for us. We’re confident, with goals in mind, and we believe that we’re going to end the season well. We believe that we are capable of reaching our goal because there are good feelings and the team is eager to start again. We will have many chances.”
For now the first team players must still train individually but the hope is that small groups will be given permission to work together soon. Athletic’s goal of qualifying for Europe is attainable, but will take a collective effort from the entire squad to finish the season in the top seven of the league table.
