Igor Angulo Closes Door On Possible Athletic Return
For several years Athletic fans have wondered if Igor Angulo could become the next Aritz Aduriz. Like Aduriz, Angulo also graduated from Lezama but didn’t start playing his best football until later in his career. Over the past four seasons the 36-year-old has led the attack for Polish club Górnik Zabrze and there have always been rumors about a possible return to Athletic.
With the striker’s contract set to expire at the end of the season he recently spoke with Mundo Deportivo where he discussed his future. For now, Angulo is in no hurry to make any decisions.
“I don’t have any offers yet, but my contract ends on 30 June. I have spoken to some teams in India, Turkey, and Poland especially. There’s nothing specific. I haven’y decided on anything and I think I’m going to wait until the last moment. My preference is to stay in Górnik because I have liked four incredible years here, with the love of the fans, but family comes first.”
Although Angulo is open to what might happen next, he’s seemingly closed the door on returning to Athletic. “That opportunity was possible a year and a half or two years ago,” said the striker. “Now it would be difficult. At that time I had scored more goals than games. Athletic is different, but I believe the time has passed.”
Angulo may not be returning to Athletic but he will always be a supporter of the club. Like other fans, the Lezama product is glad that the Copa del Rey final is being postponed until fans can attend.
“I think that the final has to be played with the fans. Also, I hope to be there if I can. The proposal to play without an audience seems complicated to me and it would have been a shame. It’s a gift for the fans to be in the final. Hopefully it will be played as soon as possible and, above all, safely with the public.”
Whether or not Igor Angulo ever does return to Athletic, he is still proof that players that come through Lezama are given the skills needed to succeed as a professional footballer. The striker has scored nearly 100 goals for Górnik and hopes to continue his career in Poland.
