Athletic Finally Return To Training At Lezama 58 Days Later
Almost two months have passed since Athletic last took the field at Lezama for a training session. Today the players were finally allowed back at the club facilities. A total of 29 players, as well as coaches and staff, underwent Covid-19 testing on Thursday. Everyone tested negative for the virus and were allowed to begin training again.
During this first phase players are required to shower and change at home while training individually. Only six players are allowed per field at Lezama, although Athletic limited it to four with 3,500 square meters per every two players. Gaizka Garitano and Patxi Ferreira oversaw Field 1 while Conditioning Coach Juan Iribarren led Field 3.
For training, each player spent 15 minutes with Ferreira, followed by 15 minutes with Garitano, and then the remaining time with Iribarren for a total of 45 minutes. Staggered sessions started at 9 a.m. and didn’t finish until after 1 p.m. All 29 players who underwent testing participated in Sunday’s training and Aritz Aduriz was the first to arrive.
Ferreira was in charge of disinfecting each ball during changes as nets, benches, and other items were used for drills because teammates are currently not allowed to pass the ball together. On the other hand, Goalkeepers were allowed to work with goalkeeping coach Aitor Iru to make saves.
Athletic will continue holding training sessions like this through next Saturday. After a period of time small groups will be given permission to work together and then eventually the entire squad. La Liga plans to resume matches on 20 June with the season finishing on 26 July.
