Unai Emery “My Heart Will Always Be With Real Sociedad, But If Athletic Ever Called Me…”
Although his time at Arsenal was disappointing, Unai Emery is still widely considered to be one of the best Basque coaches in football, if not the best. Having won silverware with Sevilla and PSG, Emery has often been mentioned as a candidate to manage Athletic in the future but his history with Real Sociedad has many convinced that he would never come to San Mamés.
As a player, Emery grew up at La Real and even represented the first team on five occasions. Despite his past the manager hasn’t closed the door on the possibility of one day coaching Athletic.
“My heart will always be with Real Sociedad, where I spent 10 years, but if Athletic ever called me…,” he told AS hinting that he would be open to coaching the Zurigorri. “I’m a professional. I’ve coached Valencia and Sevilla but if Levante or Betis ever called me…Wherever I’m wanted and will feel appreciated, I will be there and that will be the most important thing.”
With Athletic and Real Sociedad set to meet in the Copa del Rey final the most important thing to Emery is that the final take place in an open stadium. “I hope the it can be played with the fans,” he said. “I trust that next year there will be a vaccine or a treatment that will allow a normal return to stadiums and that we will once again be able to enjoy the atmosphere of football.”
Emery has yet to take a new job since leaving Arsenal but knows what he will be looking for next. “I don’t know where my next project is going to be,” he says. “I’m open to everything and want to be where I’m wanted.” The Athletic Board have fully backed Gaizka Garitano since taking office, but if there were to be a change at some point in the future Unai Emery could be a realistic option to come to San Mamés.
