Villarreal Right-Back Asier Grande Returns To Lezama
Even though Lezama scouts have no more games to attend this season, the club is working diligently to identify and incorporate the best young players from the Basque Country. Athletic’s reliance on the academy makes it imperative to bring in the most promising players and moves are already taking place.
According to La Cantera De Lezama, Asier Grande has signed with Athletic and will return to Lezama at the end of the season. The right-back originally joined Lezama in 2012 when he was just 10 years old but would later leave for Danok Bat in 2014. While playing for Danok Bat, Grande featured for the Basque U16 team as well and caught the eyes of several clubs.
After four years at Mallona, Danok Bat informed Athletic that scouts from Villarreal had come to watch Grande, which is required as part of the partnership between the two clubs. The Sporting Director at the time, José María Amorrortu, chose not to bring Grande back to Lezama but urged the young defender to continue at Danok Bat to remain close to Athletic.
In the end, Grande rejected offers from Alavés and Eibar and signed a two-year contract with Villarreal. The defender spent his first year with Villarreal’s Juvenil B team before joining CD Roda’s U19 side, one of Villarreal’s partnered clubs, where he has played this season.
Asier Grande’s contract with Villarreal will expire in June and the 17-year-old has made the decision to return home. The Bilbao-native has already agreed to a contract with Lezama and is expected to join CD Basconia for the upcoming season.
