Jon Morcillo Signs Contract Renewal With Athletic Club Through 2023
Jon Morcillo’s excellent season with Bilbao Athletic hasn’t gone unnoticed. The 21-year-old leads the team with 10 goals this season, along with 6 assists, while playing all 28 games and being one of the stars of Joseba Etxeberria’s side. Clubs in Spain and England have shown interest in the young winger who joined Lezama back in 2015, but he will continue his career in Bilbao.
On Friday Athletic officially announced that Jon Morcillo has signed a contract renewal through 2023 which will also see him promoted to the first team squad next season. The club did not mention how much the player’s release clause will be.
Morcillo’s original deal was set to expire at the end of the season and the club retained an option to extend it for an addition year by promoting him, but both parties preferred to negotiate a full renewal instead. The same thing happened with Gaizka Larrazabal last season as Athletic want to reward young players with better contracts while also securing their futures with the club.
Morcillo will join Gaizka Garitano’s squad during the preseason with a chance to earn a place in the team. If he’s unable to convince the manager the club will look to send him on loan to the Segunda, although if Bilbao Athletic manage to earn promotion Morcillo would have the great opportunity to spend another year under Joseba Etxeberria while also being available to the first team.
For now, Morcillo will soon undergo coronavirus testing with the rest of the Bilbao Athletic squad before returning to training. The Kumeak will take part in the promotional playoffs where only three wins are needed to earn a place in next year’s Segunda. Morcillo will be vitally important in the fight for promotion and may also spend time training with the first team at times once the season resumes.
