Price Tag Lowered For Athletic Target Alex Berenguer
The next transfer window will look vastly different. Instead of signing players for ridiculous amounts of money, club spending will be significantly limited due to the financial impact from the coronavirus pandemic. Having always prioritized promoting youth players, Athletic are far better prepared for the situation than most others but haven’t ruled out possible signings to strengthen the squad.
Along with clubs spending less money, player prices are expected to drop which could work in Athletic’s favor. According to reports in Italy, long time target Alex Berenguer will be available for less than the €8 million price tag which was valued in March. Athletic have been interested in bringing the 24-year-old to San Mamés since Berenguer was with Osasuna and a reduced fee could finally see the move happen.
This season Berenguer has featured in 24 games for Torino, scoring 5 goals and providing 3 assists. Berenguer’s strong defensive contribution and work rate, along with the ability to create and score chances, would make him a great fit in Gaizka Garitano’s system. However, there is already a lot of competition on the wings at Athletic.
Iker Muniain, Iñaki Williams, Ibai Gómez, Iñigo Córdoba, and Gaizka Larrazabal are all capable of starting on either side of the attack as are Óscar De Marcos, Iñigo Lekue, and Yuri Berchiche at times. Iñigo Vicente will be returning from loan and Bilbao Athletic’s Gorka Guruzeta and Jon Morcillo are expected to spend preseason with the first team. Competition will be fierce.
Despite the depth at the position Berenguer has proven at Torino that he can play at a high level and would be a solid addition to the Athletic squad. If the Zurigorri are serious about signing Alex Berenguer the next transfer window will be the best opportunity to do so. Other clubs such as Celta Vigo are also reportedly interested in the Osasuna product.
