Javi Martinez Set To Leave Bayern Munich During Upcoming Transfer Window
Javi Martinez’s days in Germany are numbered. For the past few months it’s become clear that the midfielder would be on his way out of Bayern Munich at the end of the season and it now looks to be all but certain. Local news outlet Kicker have reported that Bayern will not offer Martinez a renewal and will look to sell the 31-year-old during the next transfer window in order to avoid losing him for free in 2021 when his contract expires.
Athletic have been pursuing Martinez for the past few years and could finally be in a position to bring in back to San Mamés. Martinez left Athletic for Bayern in 2012 and has always been outspoken about his love for the city of Bilbao and willingness to return to the club. With Bayern having already decided to cash in on the Osasuna product a return to Athletic could be right around the corner.
Martinez regularly visits Bilbao and is building a house in his home town of Aiegi where he plans to live after retirement. Although he is still close with several players on the team, a return to Athletic isn’t guaranteed.
“On the one hand I would love to return to Spain because there’s no better place to live than there,” he said during a YouTube interview with teammate Alvaro Ordriozola. “But on the other hand I also feel called to live a new experience, to go to a distant country, maybe the United States or Australia. Living there for a year or two has to be a very good life and professional experience.”
The decision will ultimately be up to Martinez. Bayern are eager to sell the midfielder at the end of the season and will not prevent him from looking for a new club. Signing Javi Martinez would be a great move for Athletic, but other clubs such as Getafe are also said to be in the running.
